What is Zinc Die Casting?
Die casting is the process of forcing molten metal into a mold with high pressure so that it can form a required shape. When you use zinc as the metal for hot chamber die casting, it is zinc die casting.
For zinc die casting, you have to follow the steps below:
- First, you have to melt the zinc by heating it to its melting temperature.
- Then Inject the molten zinc into the cavity.
- After that, apply pressure so that the molten zinc takes the shape of the cavity.
- Now, wait for the part to cool down and become solid.
- Then eject the solid part.
Zinc is easily available around the world, and a huge number of people use it for die casting. Moreover, there are numerous functional applications of zinc alloy.
Advantages of Zinc Die Casting
- Zinc has a very high casting fluidity. That is why you can achieve a thinner wall section if you use zinc casting.
- Zinc diecast requires a minimum amount of machining.
- Zinc die-cast parts offer very high strength to bearing surfaces.
- You can get solid and precise dimensional accuracy with zinc diecast.
- The production rate is higher than any other metal in this casting method.
- The finished zinc diecast has a very smooth surface.
- Zinc diecast gives higher tensile strength than most other metal alloys.
Zinc Die Casting Applications
Zinc die is mainly used for the production of miniature parts. Some notable applications of zinc die casting are as follows:
- Door hinges and handles
- Faucets and other sanitary products
- Aesthetic parts of the interior of automobiles
- Power steerings
- AC systems and components
- Engine components
- Car hood components
- Car brake parts

What is Zinc Pressure Die Casting?
In the zinc pressure die casting process, you have to put high pressure on molten zinc alloy to form the shape of the cavity of the mold. The cavity will be in the inverse shape of the actual part. You have to use an automatic machine to carry out this process to get the best results.
Zinc die casting alloys are usually stronger than most other alloys. For example, it is stronger than cast iron, bronze, and aluminum alloys. Zinc pressure die casting can be used to make parts that are stronger than aluminum alloys.
Why Use Zinc for Die Casting?
For high strength and toughness within your budget, zinc die casting is better than most other castings. Any object made with zinc casting will be stronger than most other casting metals.
You have to do machining on the parts immediately after finishing the casting process. Machining on zinc alloy objects is easier than any other metal alloy. The surface appears firmer and more polished after machining with zinc die casting parts.
There are some die casting properties of every metal. i.e., strength, durability, etc. Die-cast zinc parts exceed these properties compared to other metals like bronze, magnesium, cast-iron, etc.
Will Die Cast Zinc Rust?
Zinc has excellent corrosion resistance in the natural environment. But zinc die cast alloys do not show the same properties as pure zinc. Still, the corrosion resistance of zinc alloy is so high that the rate of corrosion is found to be only 12 microns/year.
Are Parts Made with Zinc Better than Stainless Steel?
Below is a comparison table for die cast zinc and stainless steel. This table will show you whether die cast zinc is better than stainless steel or not.
Key Parameter | Die Cast Zinc | Stainless Steel |
Price | The cost of raw material is cheaper. | Price is significantly higher than zinc. |
Strength | Less strong in general. But die zinc alloy is stronger, has more impact and dimensional strength. | Stronger than zinc alloy in general. |
Corrosion | Better corrosion resistance than stainless steel. | Not better than die cast zinc. |
Die life | Zinc requires a lower casting temperature. Hence it has longer die life. | The die life of stainless steel is not longer than zinc die casting alloy. |
Production cost | Die-cast zinc has a lower production cost than stainless steel. | Stainless steel has a higher production cost than zinc allow. |
Tight tolerances and thin wall sections | Zinc alloy has better tolerance than stainless steel and is used for thin wall sections. | Stainless steel is nowhere near zinc alloy when it comes to thin wall sections. |
As you can see, there are many advantages of die cast zinc compared to stainless steel. And in terms of cost-effectiveness, zinc would make a very good alternative to stainless steel.
